Brad Carlson That he had shipmate at his side to help walk him out of this life says a lot about who we are. Thank you for being of service to him. Can we organize a memorial or provide something from all of us at the service?

Kirk VJ Neuman FYI, the website home page has been updated with the information about Carl's passing for those who are not members of this group. Once more is known, it will be updated accordingly.

Kirk VJ Neuman Brad (and all), at this point we're not sure about any service Beverly is planning for Carl. They are in Welaka, Florida and their home is in Jackson, New Hampshire. I'm sure Glenn will be able to find out more and let us know here. As for a memoria...See More

Dear Shipmates. I'm here with Carl. He did blink his eyes when I called his name and announced I am here. He is about the same as yesterday. I will talk to him about fishing and then say goodbye till tomorrow.
Stay well.

Dear Shipmates
Carl is declining rapidly. He is in Haven Hospice in Palatka Fl. I will try to see him early tomorrow morning. I have some photos that were sent to me by Toby Marquez, from our last reunion in DC, to show him. He seldom opens his eyes and his heart rate has slowed.
God Speed.

Good morning Shipmates
Carl is in still in the Hospice Facility in Palatka Fl
They are trying to manage his pain so he can come back to the facility he was in in Crescent City. Crescent City Facility is closer for Bev to visit, and more comfortable for Carl. He will have hospice care nurses attending to him there to make sure his pain is properly managed. Things change depending on Carl. I will stay in touch with Beverly and visit Carl on Friday when I return to Welaka.
Stay well and safe.Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. Glenn

Carl had a difficult time last night and was taken to a larger, better staffed and equipped hospice in Palatka Fl. I am waiting to hear from Bev (Carls wife) on the situation.
When I saw him yesterday he was having pain in the rectum area. I will update when I get more info.

Shipmates,Just got an email from Glenn Johnson who visits Carl Slack on a weekly basis. According to Glenn, Carl isn't doing well, at least not today. He is having bowel issues with lots of pain and is very weak. Carl told Glenn that he is now in hospice care, which doesn't bode well given my experiences with hospice. When Glenn left, Carl was vomiting and the facility staff was attending to him.
Glenn didn't say, but Carl is apparently still in the nursing home from my last report. He (Carl) is attempting to be transferred to a VA hospice, but isn't sure if that will actually happen.
Carl only has his smart phone with him, which he now has much difficulty operating and requests that any email you may want to send, you send through Glenn (gjohn11905@gmail.com). Glenn will make sure it gets to Carl at least weekly.
Please keep Carl in your thoughts and prayers.

Carol Raines Our thoughts are with Carl, Bev and their family at this difficult time.

Glenn Johnson Your well wishes to Carl can be sent to this web-site. I bring my I-pad with me when I visit Carl. All emails that concern the DDG-5 you can send to me. Carl no longer reads his emails and requested that I take care of that business for him. I said I would with the help of the Board.

Wayne Miller Open letter to Carl,
As shipmates I am so sorry to hear that you are in hospice, But while
you are still sailing the sea's at this time, I want you to know.

You have touched so many young sailor lives during the coarse of yours.
You have made a difference to many of us. You helped changed young boys
into strong men who were, and are now still the future of this Great
Country. Many may not realize the lessons learned, but because of you
and what you have instilled in them, have turn out to be great husbands,
family men, and leaders in their communities. There are no words that
can express the THANK YOU you deserve. You serving Our Country, was
always first for you, and it showed in your compassion and conviction as
a United Stated Navy Sailor. I was privileged and proud to have served
with you, as the many who came to know you.

May you always have calm seas and strong winds,

Carl - you are loved,

Wayne Miller
